How to fit a key safe
Quick answer: Choose a key safe with a recognised security rating, pick a spot on a solid brick wall near the door that is not overlooked from the street, drill and plug the wall, fix the safe with the screws supplied, set a code that is not obvious, and tell only the people who need it.
A key safe lets carers, family, cleaners or tradespeople get in without you having to be there. It also saves a spare key being hidden under a plant pot. The safe must be strong and properly fixed.
Police advise using a model that has passed independent security testing, such as Secured by Design approved ones.
What you will need
- A key safe with a security rating
- Drill with a masonry bit
- Wall plugs and screws (usually supplied)
- A pencil and spirit level
- A screwdriver
- A step ladder, if needed
Step by step
Choose a rated model
Look for a key safe with an independent security rating. Home insurers often ask for a particular standard, so check your policy.
Pick the position
Choose a solid brick or block wall near the door. It should be out of sight from the road if possible, but easy for carers to find. Do not fix it to a door, window frame, fence or render over a cavity.
Check behind the wall
Use a detector to check for cables and pipes. Avoid positions next to sockets or an outside light.
Mark and drill
Hold the back plate or safe against the wall, check it is level and mark the holes. Drill the holes with a masonry bit the same size as the wall plugs and deep enough for the plugs.
Fix it firmly
Push in the plugs and screw the safe tight to the wall using the screws provided. Make sure the screws are not visible when the safe is closed.
Set the code
Change the factory code to one that is not 0000, 1234 or your house number. Test it with the door open.
Put the key in and tell people
Put the key inside, close and check the safe is locked. Tell only trusted people the code, and change it if someone no longer needs it.
Tips
- Fit it at a height that carers can reach comfortably.
- Make sure the plugs are suited to the wall type: brick, block or stone.
- Do not leave a note of the code on the door or in an obvious place.
Stop and get help if
- The wall is soft, hollow or render over insulation. Fixings would not hold.
- Your insurer or landlord has rules about key safes. Check first.
- You are not sure how to use a drill on masonry.
- Your local council or care provider may offer fitting. Ask them.

Common questions
Where is the best place to put a key safe?
On a solid wall near the front or side door, not easily seen from the road. It should be fixed with proper masonry plugs.
Are key safes secure?
Good ones are. Choose one that has been tested to a recognised standard, fit it properly and use a code that is hard to guess.
Will a key safe affect my home insurance?
It can. Some insurers require a particular rating or do not allow one. Always check your policy.
